Our library was buzzing with creativity at this term’s Trinity Poetry Afternoon. The event, now in its third year, brings together students from across the school to explore ideas, share their voices and celebrate the joy of language. A special guest poet provides inspiration and encouragement.

Led by Mr Goode from the English Department, this year’s event invited students to write in response to the theme of Play and Dreams. From free verse to spoken word, students submitted poems in every imaginable style, before gathering on the day to read their work aloud in a supportive environment in front of peers and parents. The beanbags, cookies and juice added to the relaxed vibe.

This year, we were honoured to welcome guest poet Kristal Sisodia, a neurodivergent artist of Bajan and Indian heritage whose powerful poetry, music, acting, and writing has featured at the Southbank Centre, the Bush Theatre and within the BYOB Croydon collective. Their visit brought fresh energy and insight, with reflections on identity and resilience that resonated deeply with our students.

A highlight of the afternoon was the announcement of our first-ever Trinity Poet Laureate, Keaden, a Fifth-Year student whose powerful writing often explores race, social justice and the world young people hope to shape. “Being the Trinity Poet Laureate is an honour,” Keaden said. “Hearing other students’ poems repeatedly blows me away and gives me a sense of optimism. It shows how many young people are willing to set aside their fears for the greater good of their cause.”

Kristal added, “I was moved to tears by the students’ words. The quality of their work and depth of thought was truly awe-inspiring. I look forward to hearing from these bright young minds in the future.”

Kristal concluded the event with a poem that captivated the audience, not only through their powerful delivery but also through the raw emotion of their performance.

This was the first event hosted by Ms Chevalier, Trinity’s new Head Librarian. She said, “The library is the perfect venue for holding the Trinity Poetry Afternoon; this warm, inclusive, whole-school space is an intimate venue where students can perform their personally expressive poetry. It was a wonderful event, and I look forward to the library hosting similar whole school events like this in the future.”
