We were thrilled to welcome back one of our recent leavers, Lucas Rebato (Class of 2023), to speak to our Computer Science society before half term about his successful application for a degree apprenticeship in technology.
Lucas shared his journey from applying to PwC for a Flying Start Degree Apprenticeship to starting at the University of Birmingham in September. The PwC degree apprenticeships are highly competitive as offer students the opportunity to secure a degree in Computer Science as well as guaranteeing a job at the end of the four-year programme. Lucas revealed there were 1,600 applications for just 30 places last year, making it more demanding than applying to Oxbridge.
In this apprenticeship, Lucas will be fully immersing himself in the university course during his first, second and fourth years while gaining valuable work experience with PwC for eight weeks every summer. In the third year, much like a sandwich course, Lucas will be working full-time for PwC, gaining valuable real-world experience in a professional working environment.
Having been through the rigorous application process, Lucas was able to offer students some advice: he stressed the importance of honesty in applications and the need to strike a balance between confidence and humility during interviews; the importance of honing personal statements; preparation ahead of interviews to ensure knowledge of the company as well as the ability to talk about personal achievements.
As Lucas reflected on his journey, he also shed light on the availability of other degree apprenticeships, offering alternative paths to students. One of the most striking advantages of pursuing a degree apprenticeship is the financial aspect. Participants are not only paid for their work but also emerge with no student debt upon completing their degree.
In response to a student’s query about potential drawbacks, Lucas candidly stated that he couldn’t identify any significant downsides to this route. Nevertheless, he cautioned that success in this journey demands unwavering dedication at every stage of the application process, alongside strong academic performance at A Level.
Lucas’s inspirational journey and valuable insights were welcomed by current students, and we’d like to thank him for generously giving his time.
Trinity has successfully supported an increasing number of students in applying for competitive ‘earn-while-you-learn’ degree and degree-level apprenticeships across various industries. If you’re interested in finding out more, please speak to the Futures team.
