Congratulations to the students who undertook the cross-Channel swim in Trinity’s pool this week, to fundraise for our partners Hope4Malawi. Sixth Formers Jared T, Pierre R, Alex M and Fifth Year Ollie S, all members of the Water Polo 1st team, set out to swim the 1,348 lengths in 6.5 hours. With help from Mr King (King of Trin), they completed the monumental challenge in a staggering 4 hours 10 minutes.

The students have so far raised £2,453 +GiftAid of their £3,480 target (reflecting the number of kilometres they swam, 34.8km) which will go towards building a new suite of classrooms for pupils at our partner Chipwepwete Primary School in Malawi, through Hope4Malawi.

It was a huge effort from all students, with two having just finished their GCSE and A Level exams and putting training on hold. They swam a total of 288 lengths each, with Mr King contributing 200 lengths to their total. Fifth Year Caleb T also joined them in the pool to contribute 160 lengths, meaning they swam a total of 37.8km!

Head Boy Jared said, “The swim went really well. Spirits were high throughout, even towards the end when it felt like we were swimming through concrete. We finished in just over four hours, so much faster than we’d expected – the 18 Lucozades and 10 Haribo packets probably had something to do with that! We all finished with a smile and gorged on some pizzas to celebrate our victory. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped make this a success.”

Mr King, Director of Sport, said, “This has been an outstanding effort from the boys, I am so proud of them for taking on this challenge and for the fundraising they’ve managed so far. I am absolutely shattered. I think we have all realised why we play Water Polo and don’t swim, it’s tough maintaining interest in swimming long-distance!”

Mr Timm, Trinity Malawi Project lead, said, “I don’t think the students realise the difference this money will make. What they have done is amazing, and I am excited for Jared and the other current Lower Sixth Formers to see when they go out to Malawi in the summer of 2025.”

The JustGiving page is still live, please help the students get to their target and consider donating here.
