Two Trinity students enjoyed an unforgettable summer of international hockey, representing England U16s at the 8 Nations tournament in Wałcz, Poland in July.
Now Fifth Year Oscar and Lower Sixth student Ed were selected for the England squad competing against some of Europe’s leading hockey nations, including Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland, Poland and Ireland. Ed was also given the honour of captaining England during the tournament.
Germany eventually took the title, beating Belgium 3-2 in the final, while Spain finished third. England narrowly missed out on a semi-final place following close matches against both Spain and eventual champions Germany.
“Although we were disappointed with the results at the 8 Nations, it was such a valuable experience to spend time with teammates, play against and meet people from other nations, and compete against Europe’s best,” said Ed. “We lost narrowly to Spain and Germany, the eventual champions, which unfortunately meant we missed out on a semi-final spot.”
Both students have developed their hockey through Trinity’s programme, with Ed highlighting the combination of enjoyment, high-quality coaching and individual support that has helped him progress.
“What I enjoy most about hockey at Trinity is the training environment, which is the perfect blend of fun and useful for developing our skills. The coaches really care about getting the best out of each student individually. It was also the Head of Hockey Mr Giles [who also coaches for England Hockey] who put me forward for England trials, so I wouldn’t be half the player I am today without them.”
A recent highlight? “Calling my mum to let her know I was captaining my country for the first time is a moment I’ll never forget!”
A brilliant achievement for Oscar and Ed, and an exciting start to another season of Trinity hockey.
