The annual Prizegiving Ceremony once again marked the end of another fantastic academic year at Trinity School, Croydon, celebrating the achievements, character and contributions of students across our independent school community.
Our Chair of Governors, and alumnus, David Seymour, opened the ceremony by congratulating everyone on another successful year. He highlighted two examples of Trinity students making a positive impact on others: an email from a bus driver who said students thanking him and wishing him a good day had lifted his spirits, and a group of students who looked after a young girl after she became separated from her mother on the bus one morning. Both stories reflected the importance of representing the school with kindness, compassion and integrity, both within the local community and beyond.
Headmaster Mr Kennedy reiterated that Trinity’s ambition extends beyond academic success. While the school strives for excellence in the classroom, its greatest aim is to help students develop strong values and character. This year alone, more than 1,000 Good Human Award nominations have been made, recognising acts of kindness both in school and in the wider community. He reminded the audience that a Trinity education is about developing young people who will make a positive contribution wherever life takes them.
Mr Kennedy also paid tribute to the teaching staff leaving Trinity this year, thanking them for their dedication and the lasting contribution they have made to school life, whether they have been with us for one year or more than twenty.
A musical interlude came from this year’s Trinity Musician of the Year, Nathan Ikechukwu Daniel (also shortlisted for this year’s BBC Young Musician of the Year), who performed the first two movements of Alyssa Morris’ Four Personalities on the oboe, accompanied by Mr Evans, to rapturous applause, showcasing the exceptional musical talent nurtured through Trinity’s Music Department.
Students from across the school were then recognised for their outstanding achievements in academics, sport, music, drama, art and service before the audience heard from three inspiring speakers whose reflections perfectly captured the spirit of the occasion.
Guest speaker and Trinity alumnus Olly Rathbone (Class of 2013) shared his remarkable story of rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, unsupported, at the end of last year. Reflecting on the resilience, teamwork and determination needed to overcome setbacks along the way, he encouraged students to embrace challenges and persevere when things do not go to plan. Returning to Trinity’s motto, They who persevere conquer, Olly reminded students that success is not about avoiding failure, but about continuing to move forward.
In his final words as Head of School, Upper Sixth student Oscar reflected on the privileges and opportunities many students enjoy, encouraging everyone to approach life with humility, kindness and ambition. He urged students to make the most of the opportunities available to them, to appreciate the support of their families and school community, and to use their talents to make a positive difference to others.
Fellow Head of School Abi spoke candidly about overcoming perfectionism and learning to see setbacks as opportunities for growth. Sharing her own experience of disappointment and discovering a new perspective, she encouraged students not to let a single ambition define them, reminding them that there is always a bigger picture and new possibilities waiting beyond life’s unexpected turns.
As the school year draws to a close, Prizegiving provided an opportunity to celebrate not only academic excellence, but also the character, creativity and commitment shown by students across every aspect of school life. The ceremony reflected Trinity’s commitment to providing an outstanding all-round education, where students are encouraged to flourish academically, discover their passions and develop the confidence to make a difference.
Congratulations to all this year’s prize winners, and thank you to our staff, families and wider school community for another successful year. We wish everyone a happy, restful summer and look forward to welcoming students back in September for another exciting chapter in Trinity’s story.
