The Trinity Chess team has played its first two league games of the new season, against Wilson’s and Dunottar.
Chess at Trinity grew in popularity after lockdown and continues to attract players with many students practising every break and lunchtime in the library, as well as through dedicated Chess clubs. Competitive games are always on a Friday after school, underlining the commitment from the students to their sport.
Miss Eminsang, Teacher of Maths who oversees the chess league competitions, reports back from the first two games:
“The first competitive chess match of the season saw Trinity face-off against Wilson’s with high hopes.
Fourth Year Eddie put up a strong fight against his counterpart, but ultimately fell short in a tightly contested endgame. There were several notable performances from George, who used a clever combination of tactics to outwit his opponent, and Harry, who caught his opponent off guard by a series of clever manoeuvres.
However, despite a valiant effort from our players, Wilson’s emerged victorious.
In our second match, we faced a formidable challenge against Dunottar School, as their A-team plays aggressive attacks across all boards.
One of the standout performances came again from Eddie, who secured a well-deserved win in a meticulously strategic and challenging match-up. Another highlight was the remarkable performance by First Year student Harun on board 6. Harun showed immense potential and poise in his debut performance, acquiring his first victory. Captain Ed held his ground and earned a very well-deserved half-point through a carefully strategized draw, testament to his concentration, endurance and ability to withstand pressure.
Although our team showcased their precision and prowess in closely contested battles, ultimately Dunottar won the points.
Well done to all those who played and I look forward to success in our next match, against Reigate School.”
