This week has been a typically busy week in the life of the Music Department. There have been performances every day for our talented young musicians, plus visiting professionals and the opportunity to play in incredible venues.

Monday: Music Award Holders’ Concert

On Monday, we had the absolute joy of hosting a brilliant concert, showcasing the incredible talents of around 20 of our Music Award Holders. These students are our scholars, who benefit from free music tuition and the opportunity to develop their skills with additional performances.

The performances were nothing short of spectacular – a wonderfully varied mix of year groups, instruments, and genres that kept the audience absolutely captivated. From the rhythmic pulse of the drum kit to the expressive finesse of classical guitar, and from soaring violin melodies to the rich, resonant tones of cello – it was a celebration of musical diversity and excellence.

We also witnessed some truly jaw-dropping performances from our JBugs that left us all wondering how such young musicians can already play with such maturity and confidence. The future is clearly very bright! A huge bravo to everyone who performed – it was a real treat to see so much passion, skill, and joy in one place. Here’s to many more concerts like this one!

Tuesday: Chamber Music Concert

Tuesday’s Chamber Music Concert was a real celebration of our wind and brass talent – a brilliant evening full of energy, precision, and musical camaraderie. It was fantastic to see students stepping up and taking ownership of their music-making in these smaller ensembles.

There is something so special about the way chamber groups work together, and our performers showed real maturity, leadership, and flair. Highlights included the bold brilliance of Trinity Trumpets, the charm and sparkle of Flutes and Toots, the rich harmonies of the Lower Brass Ensemble, the unique sound world of the Bassoon Trio, and more! A huge well done to everyone involved .

Wednesday: Recital with alumna Jeanette Szeto

On Wednesday, we were pleased to present a viola lunchtime recital given by alumna Jeanette Szeto (Class of 2020), accompanied by Mr Evans, Head of Piano. It was great to see students and staff alike attending an amazing performance given by one of our recent graduates.

Jeanette is in her final year at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and is preparing for her final recital as well as the final of the prestigious Gold Medal Competition, representing the strings.

Her performance was spellbinding from the first note of the famous Chaconne by J. S. Bach (arr. for solo viola), followed by an ethereal rendition of the Missy Mazzoli’s Dissolve, O my Heart (arr. for viola solo) and concluding with the characterful Lachrymae by Benjamin Britten. From barely whispered sounds to full force culminations, it was a treat to see one of our students becoming a sophisticated musician.

We wish Jeanette best of luck with her preparations and her imminent performances.

Thursday: Steinway competition performance

On Thursday evening, Trinity’s prize-winning pianists took part in a celebratory recital at Steinway Hall, London, following their successes in the Trinity Piano Festival and competition earlier last term.

The top students in each category (Diploma, Grades 7-8, Grades 4-6, Grades 0-3) all delivered an outstanding recital to a captivated and appreciative audience. Many congratulations to all our musicians.

Friday: Jazz Club

Tonight, we host Trinity Jazz Club featuring Rachel Sutton with the Roland Perrin Trio. Support will be courtesy of Trinity’s Jazz Collective, with students sitting-in throughout the evening.
