Congratulations to our Trinity 1st XV Rugby team who last weekend beat Blundell’s School to qualify for the National Schools’ Cup Final next week. Despite it being a tough match, Trinity triumphed with a final score of 21-10 and will play in the final at Twickenham Stadium to defend our title.
Mr Roberts, Head of Rugby, shares the match report:
“The match was tight from the get-go with both teams’ attempts to make inroads in attack coming up against stiff defence. After a few missed opportunities, Trinity took the lead around the 20-minute mark with Max Farrell being put away by Conor Byrne to score in the corner. Trinity should perhaps have added to their lead later in the half, but some last-ditch Blundell’s defence kept them at bay.
“Roles were reversed to start the second half with Trinity being forced into some last-ditch defending of their own with Blundells finally scoring to take a 10-7 lead with 20 minutes remaining.
“From there it could have gone either way, with both sides creating opportunities that were nullified by some heroic defence. Eventually it was Trinity who came through with Quinn Singh dotting down following a well-executed driving maul and Eddie Brown converting from close range to seal the victory. Final score 21-10 to Trinity.”
Huge congratulations boys!
Trinity will face Oakham School at Twickenham Stadium next Thursday 16 March (K.O. 4.00pm).
Staff and students will be travelling up to Twickenham to support our team. At school, the match will be shown on large screens. The match will be streamed live here for anyone keen to watch from home/work.
We wish them every success in the final, and the whole school community will be cheering them on!
It has recently been announced that three of our 1st XV team have been selected for the England Rugby Men’s U18 squad. Josh Bellamy, Conor Byrne and Lucas Friday were part of the 41-player squad named by head coach Jonathan Pendlebury. Their season starts with a match against France U18 on Saturday 18 March (K.O. 12.30pm), so potentially a very challenging week for our players!
