We recently welcomed back alumnus Tom Mogford (Class of 2021) to speak to our Sixth Form students about his decision to study abroad for his degree. Tom is currently studying a four-year course in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Tom’s talk, part of our after-school Trinity Twilight sessions, centred on the application process, what it’s like to study abroad, the course, and the general logistics of living away from the UK.

He spoke enthusiastically about how much he is enjoying university and life in Colorado: he can go skiing in the morning and be back for afternoon lectures and has magnificent views of the mountains from his shared accommodation. All of this made everyone in the room very envious!

Tom explained that he initially had the idea of studying abroad when he was in the Third Year, and his parents actively encouraged and supported him to apply. Our Futures (FKA Careers) team encourage students where possible to keep their options open, and Tom had the safety net of a deferred place at a UK university, in case he didn’t settle in the US.

Although Tom loves Colorado, he anticipates that he will return to the UK to complete a Master’s and would prefer to live and work in the UK long-term.

The students had some fantastic questions, and many were keen to carry on the conversation after the talk had ended.

Lower Sixth student Kristian said, “I absolutely loved the talk. It was great that Tom went into the finer details and gave a real insight of life as a university student in the US, not only running through a typical daily routine and indeed the structure of a year at university, but also talking in depth about the nature of the course he is taking, including information about the workload and examinations.

“He also emphasised the flexibility of the course, the variety of classes one can take and the variety of cultures that exist in a country as expansive as the US. It was also fascinating to learn about how university across the Atlantic differs in comparison to in the UK. Please keep inviting alumni back to talk about their experiences of university!”

Many thanks to Tom for sharing his experience of studying abroad!

Every September, Trinity School in Croydon hosts an international universities fair in partnership with University Guys, with representatives from some of the leading universities across Europe, America and Asia in school to discuss studying abroad with our students. We have a small number of students every year pursuing studies abroad, some on sports scholarships in the US.
