Congratulations to First Year student Joey who competed in The Kickboxing GB Nationals in Nottingham at the start of the February half term and secured a spot on Team GB after a fantastic performance.
The competition brought together 61 of the top kickboxing clubs from around the country, with an incredible 1,278 starts across the competition across two days. Joey’s club Phoenix Martial Arts in Croydon, was one of the top 3 clubs in the competition.
The athletes who placed 1st and 2nd across each category were selected to represent Team GB at the European Cup in Portugal in August.
Joey (pictured far left) says, “Despite being unwell on the lead up to the competition, I gave it my best shot and performed well enough to secure my place on Team GB and will be travelling to Portugal in the summer. I am really pleased with this as I also had to move up an age and weight category, so I am one of the youngest and at a lower weight.
“I now have to do lots of squad training camps on the lead up to August to get even better and hopefully bring home a trophy! I have trained with the GB squad before. The training camps consist of the current and previous European and world champions and coaches from all over the UK who share their expertise and experiences and prepare us for the competitions by doing sparring and working on drills and fitness. I will be doing training camps with them every month in the lead up to Portugal.
“As well as this training, I will still be competing for my club Phoenix Martial Arts in Croydon, and we have another big competition coming up in April in Birmingham.”
Well done to Joey!
