Two Lower Sixth Economics students recently completed a two-day work experience placement at Edgbaston Investment Partners in London, gaining valuable insight into careers in finance, asset management, and investment research as part of Trinity School’s wider Sixth Form careers and higher education programme.

Amber described the opportunity as a valuable introduction to the financial sector and a chance to apply analytical thinking in a professional environment. “I had the amazing opportunity to undertake a two day work experience at Edgbaston Investment Partners. The placement initially came about through the school, and then I had to independently write a cover letter to officially apply,” she explained.

During the placement, Amber took part in a group investment research project focused on the global tyre manufacturing industry. Her work explored whether the sector offered strong long-term investment potential and how different market segments performed.

“Through my research, I concluded that premium tyre manufacturers generally offered better long-term prospects due to their stronger pricing power, brand loyalty, and higher profit margins. Based on my analysis, I selected Hankook as my preferred investment opportunity within the sector,” she said.

Students also met professionals from across the firm, including the Head of Compliance, Head of Marketing, and investment managers, gaining insight into how different teams contribute to decision-making in an asset management company. Amber also used industry-standard tools such as Bloomberg, which is widely used in financial markets analysis.

“The experience demonstrated the importance of research, critical thinking, communication, and attention to detail when making investment decisions,” Amber reflected. “It has strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in finance after my A Levels.”

Alex also took part in the placement and explored areas including compliance, client servicing, marketing, dealing, and operations, alongside a research project into the Vietnamese beer market. Speaking with professionals also broadened his thinking about university choices. “Many of them did not do economics at university… this has allowed me to open my horizons to different university courses,” he said.

The experience gave both students a clearer understanding of careers in finance and the value of Sixth Form work experience through an independent school in Croydon, supporting their preparation for university and future pathways.
