Politics Society (PolSoc) was absolutely thrilled to welcome back two Trinity alumni for a special joint presentation and Q&A session at the end of last term. Lord Gavin Barwell, former Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Theresa May, and Sir Adam Constable KC, a High Court Judge, returned to share insights from their remarkable careers.

Sixth Form students listened intently as both speakers briefly described their journeys from Trinity to their current roles. Sir Adam took a moment to explain the key differences between a barrister and a solicitor, offering valuable context for those interested in legal careers.

Following their introductions, the floor was opened to questions from the student audience. The conversation covered a range of topical and current issues, including immigration and the Grenfell Tower tragedy, with both guests offering their unique perspectives shaped by years of experience in public service and law.

It was a fascinating and inspiring session, and we are hugely grateful to Lord Barwell and Sir Adam for generously giving their time to engage with our students. Following the talk, two PolSoc members shared the following thoughts:

“I found the talk by Lord Gavin Barwell and Sir Adam Constable very helpful regarding how their careers in their respective fields progressed. I found Gavin’s view on the future of the Conservative Party particularly enlightening, as it portrayed the issue in a way I had not encountered before. His highlighting of the difficult balance the Conservative Party will have to create between the centre ground and the ‘new’ right was especially compelling.” Seb, Lower Sixth.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion and found it very insightful and engaging. I was particularly struck by their comments on the importance of the monarch for Britain’s soft power, which will have caused some of the audience to reassess their views on the role and relevance of the Royal Family.” Abigail, Lower Sixth.

Many thanks to Mr Timm, Teacher of History and Politics, for this write-up.
