A distinguished alumnus and a much-loved former member of staff from Trinity have been recognised in the recent King’s Birthday Honours List, celebrating decades of service to public life and education.
Alumnus Professor Tim Orchard, who was Head Chorister at Trinity in 1984–85, has been awarded a CBE for services to the NHS. He is Chief Executive of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and a consultant gastroenterologist, with a career spanning clinical practice, research and senior leadership within the health service.
With early signs of leadership qualities while at Trinity, this recognition reflects his contribution to leading NHS healthcare improvement over many years, culminating in his role heading one of London’s major teaching hospital trusts.

Also honoured is former Trinity teacher Eric Jones, who has been awarded an MBE for services to education and young people.
Now 84, Mr Jones taught drama and Religious Studies for more than five decades, including 33 years in London schools, and retired in 2006. He didn’t stop then, directing community theatre productions and tutoring LAMDA students when he moved to Worcester. During the pandemic he returned to education as a volunteer supply teacher, supporting schools through a challenging period, and has only recently stepped back from teaching.
Widely remembered at Trinity for his energy, creativity and belief in every student’s potential, he was a driving force behind school productions including Godspell and Barnum, with his final production being Bugsy Malone. He also played a significant role in pastoral life and anti-bullying work.
In a tribute at the time of his retirement (see here), colleagues highlighted his philosophy of education: “We don’t teach by fear anymore.” His approach centred on respect, encouragement and helping young people to grow in confidence.
Since retiring from full-time teaching, Mr Jones has continued to work with young people through theatre groups and tutoring, and remains active in supporting teenage performers. “I’d still do it if I could,” he said. “I’ve loved every minute of it.”
Together, their honours reflect the breadth of the Trinity community, from dedicated classroom teaching to national leadership in public service.
