The Sixth Form and Futures teams hosted sessions covering wide-ranging topics, including composing a strong personal statement, applying to Oxbridge and specialist courses, and student finance, alongside alternative pathways such as apprenticeships, overseas study and taking a gap year.
We were delighted to welcome a representative from Birmingham University, who had attended our inaugural Futures Fair last term, and gave students the inside track on what makes a strong candidate.

On Wednesday, three 2024 leavers – Quinn, Maria and Leah – returned to share their experiences of their first year in a degree apprenticeship. They covered IT, finance and law between them, demonstrating the broad mix of opportunities available for students looking to start working immediately. Degree apprenticeships are highly competitive, and the trio also offered tips on managing the process alongside academic work.

Another three alumni – Kofi, Felix and Kashvi – shared their perspectives on writing a strong personal statement.

We also welcomed back Tom (Class of 2021), who is currently studying Political Science at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He discussed his experience of studying abroad and the intricacies of the American application system.
On Thursday, 20 more recent alumni from the Classes of 2019-2024 joined us for a panel discussion in the Mitre Theatre and break-out group discussions covering a variety of different subjects and university locations.
Mr Aldridge, Head of Futures, said, “Members of the Lower Sixth impressed tremendously with their enthusiasm and determination, embracing a week that saw them making a flying start to their university applications and exploring alternative future pathways. As the culmination of our Lower Sixth programme, they have been reflecting upon extension activities conducted over the last few months, adding significant value to their applications. The one-to-one interactions with alumni were especially popular, with our current students enjoying the opportunity to hear from those who were in their shoes until only recently.”
Overall, it was a very successful Higher Education Week, leaving students feeling excited about their prospects and keen to get ahead of the application process.
Many thanks to all our guests and alumni who took the time to inspire our current Lower Sixth.
