Trinity recently hosted its second annual ‘Eurovision’ event in the Trinity Concert Hall after school. It would be more accurately titled ‘Worldvision’ given that it featured songs from all around the globe, but the ideas of fun, surprising performances and bizarre outfits that Eurovision conjures were certainly lived up to!
The judges and audiences were treated to songs in Hungarian, Finnish, Chinese and German amongst other languages and students were able to celebrate their own heritage and the diversity of our community.
The competition featured performances from groups and individuals from First Year to Upper Sixth and all the participants and audience members supported each other vocally from start to finish. Some students even managed to perform in two groups in two different languages and there was an impressive array of musical and vocal talent on show.
Upper Sixth student Alex, who founded the event last year, hosted again with Ethan alongside him telling jokes which were as high quality as some of the music.
Alex said, “In the two years that I have hosted and organised Trinity Eurovision, it has been amazing to see how the school community can come together through international music. People have given their all when participating in such a wide range of languages. Last year, we had quite a few repeats of languages and it was lovely to see seven different countries represented this year!”

In addition, four judges presided over events: Mr Benjamin, Head of German and Teacher of Spanish and French, brought his language expertise to the proceedings; Mr Swinson, former Director of Music, and Mrs Fuge, Head of Singing, cast their expert musical ears over events, and huge Eurovision fan Mrs Beresford-Miller, Head of RS, completed the panel. Competitors were assessed in terms of their language, performance and musical quality amongst other things.
After much deliberation, the judges arrived at their decision and voted electronically through the high-tech system set up by Upper Sixth student Dhyan, who also managed the logistics of the event expertly. In third place was a group of Upper Sixth students led by the inimitable Michael singing in Finnish, and Fourth Year Edward performed a wonderful rendition of ‘The bird and the child’ in French to secure second place. The winner, however, was Upper Sixth Neha with her performance of Asku Laska. She combined wonderful vocals with traditional Indian dance and was deservedly crowned the winner by the judges.
Mrs Beresford-Miller, commented, “It was a complete joy to be a judge at this year’s Trinity Eurovision Song Contest and I was thoroughly impressed with the confidence and command shown over a variety of languages by our students. Neha was a well-deserved winner with her performance representing India. In true Eurovision style, I wanted to see a dance routine and she certainly delivered. Congratulations to all the performers who showed a strong ability not only to master singing in another language but also in entertaining the thoroughly appreciative audience.”
The event was the fun and light-hearted celebration that it was intended to be, and we look forward to seeing what students will produce next year!
