Sixth Form English students enjoyed a trip to London’s Almeida Theatre last Wednesday to see the sold-out production of Golden Boy, featuring Trinity Second Year student Anton in the role of Young Joe Bonaparte, alongside acclaimed actor Josh O’Connor.

Written by Clifford Odets and set in 1930s America, Golden Boy tells the story of a talented young violinist who is drawn towards a career in boxing, exploring the tensions between artistic ambition, financial success and the American Dream.

Upper Sixth English student Tom shares his review of the evening:

“The combination of inventive technical design and strong performances made it a memorable evening. The production included a beautiful string quartet, fantastic expressionistic fight scenes with a camera concealed in a suspended punching-bag, and the intense philosophical debates of Italian-American elders.

“It also notably featured current Second Year Trinity student Anton playing Young Joe Bonaparte, who begins the play with a striking violin solo and delivers a compelling performance throughout as he captures the tragedy of a character torn between artistic passion and material ambition.”

Anton is no stranger to the professional stage. Last year, he made his stage debut as Young Thomas in the National Theatre’s The Land of the Living, sharing the role with three other young actors. Together, they went on to win the inaugural Best Child Performance award at the 2026 WhatsOnStage Awards, a fantastic achievement which we celebrated earlier this year.

Anton has been performing throughout the sold-out run of Golden Boy at the Almeida, playing the younger version of Joe Bonaparte, portrayed by Josh O’Connor. It was a particularly special evening for the Trinity group, accompanied by Mr Doyle and Dr Asquith, who had the opportunity to support a fellow student on a major London stage.

For those who missed the production in London, Golden Boy has also been filmed for National Theatre Live and will be screened in cinemas internationally from 5 November, giving audiences another opportunity to enjoy the production.

Congratulations to Anton on this wonderful achievement, and thank you to Tom for sharing his thoughtful review of the evening.
