Our Sixth Form Politics Society was fortunate to secure a handful of tickets to the sold-out live show of the popular podcast, The Rest is Politics this week. Hosted for the first time at The O2, Alastair Campbell, and Rory Stewart were there to discuss current political issues and take questions from the audience, offering an insider’s view on politics at home and abroad.

Five Upper Sixth students, the leadership group of PolSoc, were delighted to attend.

Lily said, “Watching The Rest is Politics live provided a useful insight into the political processes of the UK, the US and internationally. For the past few years, I’ve been a fan of the podcast and I’ve always found the hosts very entertaining. Seeing it live made me realise how many people are passionate about politics as they filled out nearly the whole of the O2 arena.

“When they discussed the US presidential election, the hosts talked about the huge gender divide that defines who the population votes for: Harris or Trump. This related a lot to the voting behaviour topic in the politics A Level course, when we learn about the factors that influence which party people vote for. The discussion of the Conservative leadership race also related to our topic of political parties.

“Overall, it was inspiring to watch knowledgeable people discuss politics in front of such a large crowd with such confidence and ease whilst maintaining an interesting debate with their opposing arguments. Finally, they finished it off with a bagpipe performance that was a fun ending to watch.”

Oscar agreed, “The experience was brilliant, it was a great chance to see people who I had enjoyed listening to on the podcast. Their views and discussions around issues like the Conservative leadership race as well as Labour’s first 100 days was balanced, interesting and engaging.

“The trip was also a great chance to bond with the others who make up the leadership of Politics Society, it was a very fun night. I enjoyed the fact that people could send in their questions and have Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart answer them live on stage as it felt so authentic.”

Alistair and Rory were joined by Anthony Scaramucci and Katty Kay, hosts of the US spin-off podcast, to discuss the presidential election and candidates.

Politics Society is one of the Sixth Form super-curricular societies at Trinity School, Croydon; providing students with a forum in which to explore ideas beyond the curriculum and develop their leadership skills.
