The Trinity Music Department hosted another successful Junior Orchestral Day last weekend, which saw 90 pupils from 30 different local primary schools attend.
The Junior Orchestral Day is an opportunity for young musicians aged between 8-12 years old – and playing to a standard of grade 2 and above – to benefit from an extraordinary day of expert tuition and musical experience.
The day is spent learning new repertoire, to be played at the end of the day in an informal concert in our very own Trinity Concert Hall. The pupils experience a mixture of full rehearsals and sectionals with nine of our specialist instrumental teachers, all of whom are active performers and distinguished teachers in their own right.
The repertoire for the day was Capriccio Espagnol, Dance and Pirates of the Caribbean giving the young musicians an opportunity to play not only classical, but some more contemporary music. They practised skills they have learned through their own instrumental lessons, and we were able to reinforce the work of their own teachers. We also aimed to introduce them to new skills that will open different musical avenues and provide tools to tackle different challenges.
The children all really enjoyed learning how to play in a big ensemble, in a big concert hall. They made friends with like-minded young musicians, and we hope everyone had fun along the way. The informal concert at the end of the day was joyful, and we were glad to welcome back some parents to provide an enthusiastic audience.
We were also delighted to welcome two fine young harpists to join us for the day and it was a pleasure to listen to them play alongside the other orchestral instruments. Well done to all who attended.
The popular Junior Orchestral Day takes place at the start of every Autumn Term. Please keep an eye on our Events page for future dates.
