For the second time in as many days, female students made Trinity history – this time with the Trinity Girls’ Football team playing its first ever fixture against Alleyn’s School as part of the ISFA U18s Girls’ Cup.
The players have been training every week since the beginning of term but had not yet stepped out onto the pitch for a competitive game, and although there were some nerves, there was a lot of buzz and excitement for the historical moment. The match was at Home and the team all donned their Trinity football kit, pads and football boots for the first time, with some even borrowing boots from the Boys’ 1st team!
It was a challenging match on a full-sized pitch demanding a lot of stamina across the two 35-minute halves, with Alleyn’s being previous National Cup winners and two members of the team currently playing for Chelsea Women’s U18s. Although the final score was 7-0 to Alleyn’s, our Trinity girls had a brilliant time and loved every minute of the match.
Mr Wilson, Head of Football, says, “There were some really great performances from all the players, but particularly Lauren Baldwin, Eva Haunstetter, Abbie Daly who was tenacious from the start, and Caragh Haspel who was wonderful mid-field.”
Next up the Girls’ Football team will take part in the Surrey Schools FA Girls U18 Tournament, and the Sports Department are seeking further fixtures in the Girls’ Football calendar over the coming months, with many schools also in the early stages of establishing Girls’ Football.
Football at Trinity has been growing in popularity across the school, and last year saw the largest number of football fixtures ever in the school’s history! The 2021-22 total of 161 fixtures surpassed the previous record by nearly 50, and already this term Trinity has played 64 fixtures across the Boys’ and now Girls’ teams.
We are very proud of the Girls’ Football team, representing Trinity so well and making school history this week. We cannot wait to see what’s next. Well done team!
