On Sunday 1 March Trinity’s 1st VII Netball team competed in the Surrey County Netball Finals. They qualified for the final back in October, when they had only been playing together as a team for a number of weeks. During the tournament, the girls faced a tough group, seeing them compete against well-established teams that had been playing and training together for years.
The girls kicked-off the tournament playing against Epsom College, and although the game was well fought, they were beaten by the previous county champions by only three goals. Next up were former National Champion teams Putney High and Guildford High. The team drew with Putney and played a close game with Guildford, where the girls led all the way with Guildford only managing to turnover two goals in the last thirty minutes. The last match of the day however saw an outstanding win against KCS Wimbledon, with a massive 10-2 points to Trinity reflecting both the perseverance and strength of the team.
As the group stages ended, the team had to settle for a third-place finish, just missing out on a spot in the semi-final. However, the spirit and determination of the team to compete against well established and highly sought out teams was commendable.
Mrs Bennett, Head of Netball, stated that “All in all, it was a fabulous day of netball and the girls should be very proud of themselves. It wasn’t quite enough to see them through to the semi finals this time, but it shows that Trinity Netball can compete with the very best.”
Mrs Baulf, who also coaches the team, agreed, “There were some beautiful passages of play and the team held their own against some tough players. An extra minute or so in the halves, and the results may have been different!”
Players of the tournament were awarded to Lower Sixth student Alli for her tremendous energy as GA (Goal Attack) and Upper Sixth student Olivia for her control and technical ability in the centre court. Well done to all the girls for both their attitude and effort throughout the tournament.
