Our First Year students enjoyed an unforgettable start to the term on their residential trip to Boetius, Trinity’s outdoor activities centre, in South Wales. Across three action-packed days, students took part in activities designed to build confidence, teamwork and resilience to mark their first month together at school.

The students quickly immersed themselves in the beautiful surroundings of Craig Y Nos Castle, beginning with team-building exercises and orienteering in the evening sun. Back at the centre, hot chocolate and popcorn were followed by games of Jenga, Uno and even a home-made football game called TRIN. Dinner was the school favourite, chicken katsu curry, with brownies that were met with much approval.

A lively round of Taskmaster brought plenty of laughter, with challenges including walking as slowly as possible, explaining how to tie shoelaces backwards, and even reciting the alphabet in reverse. One boy’s faultless backwards alphabet performance had the whole room cheering.

The second day took students out into the wild beauty of the Brecon Beacons, where they tackled gorge walking and climbing at Dinas Rock and Gorge Falls. Staff were struck by the way students supported one another throughout, showing encouragement and kindness in moments of challenge. For First Year Danyal, this is also something that will stay with him. He said, “A key event that I will remember is Gorge Walking. Some students struggled, but their friends supported them by cheering and motivating them to complete the challenges.”

First Year Isaac added, “The trip to Boetius was brilliant. I loved spending time with my new school mates. The most exciting part of the trip was the exhilarating gorge walking. The most memorable part for me, as it was my birthday, was the boys and teachers singing happy birthday as they descended the mountain towards me. It sounded amazing and was truly memorable!”

The trip finished with a spectacular waterfall walk to Henryhd Falls, the tallest waterfall in South Wales, lit up by the setting sun. It was a fitting end to three days filled with friendship, courage and fun.

The trip to the Boetius Centre is a flagship part of the Trinity First Year experience, designed to help students build new friendships, develop independence and grow in organisation. It is also an excellent opportunity to get to know their tutors and peers in a different environment. Two form groups at a time spend three school days at our outdoor centre, ensuring the whole year group shares in this important rite of passage.
