Trinity CCF cadets from Fourth Year to Lower Sixth took part in an Army Section Range Camp over the weekend of 13 and 14 December, spending a full day live firing at Pirbright Army Training Centre.
The camp was open to experienced cadets who had previously attended a Range Day or Range Camp and were in date with their weapon handling tests. This ensured everyone arrived confident, prepared and ready to make the most of the opportunity.
As Sergeant Legge (Lower Sixth) explains, range days are a highlight of the Trinity CCF calendar. “Range days in the CCF are a great opportunity for cadets to get a chance to shoot with live rounds on an army range at varying distances, and to improve their skills with the help of the many staff.”
Although cadets from Caterham were unable to attend on this occasion, the smaller group proved a real advantage. “This was to the benefit of the Trinity cadets as we were able to do more shooting due to all the excess rounds,” said Sergeant Legge.
The day began with firing at 100 metres, before cadets who met the required standard progressed to 200 metres and then 300 metres. For some of the younger cadets, this marked their first experience of a full range day. “It was a great chance for the younger cadets to improve their skills,” Sergeant Legge added.
There were several notable achievements throughout the day. Cadet Lang showed impressive perseverance, moving from early difficulties to scoring 15 out of 15 shots in the prone position. Colour Sergeant Barker achieved her 1st Class Shooting Badge, while Sergeant Legge recorded an excellent 196mm grouping at 200 metres.
“The cadets had a great time due to the support from the staff,” said Sergeant Legge, with particular thanks given to visiting staff who attended despite their own cadets being absent. Plans are already underway to welcome more sections to future range camps.
