Last weekend a group of Trinity boys and girls journeyed to Middle Earth and back again as they performed the soundtrack to the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to packed out audiences at the Royal Albert Hall.
Part of the Royal Albert Hall’s Films in Concert series, audiences enjoyed the screening of the film with Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore’s epic score performed live by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and our talented singers in the Philharmonic Chorus. Trinity has a long history of performing for the Films in Concert Series, with the choir singing for the first Lord of the Rings Film, Fellowship of the Ring in May 2022 and Titanic in July 2022.
Mr Swinson, Director of Music, says, “With five performances across three days and multiple rehearsals in the week prior, it was a dedicated effort from all involved. We are delighted to say that we have been invited back again to perform the final film ‘Return of the King’ in March 2024. Well done to all, particularly Second Year Oliver Barlow who was our star soloist for each performance.”
Broadway World review stated, “Having a live orchestra and choir lifts Lord Of The Rings: The Towers to entirely new levels of cinematic ecstasy.” While Young(ish) Perspective blogger recalled the “standout child singer who rivalled Lusk’s incredible vocals and had the hairs on my arms standing to attention.”
Lower Sixth student, Cailtin de Sousa, has just joined the school and reports back from the experience: “Rehearsals started with the Conductor and Philharmonic Chorus on Sunday 17 September at Emmanuel School, with Mr Swinson having conducted some rehearsals in school with the Trinity Boys Choir and Sixth Formers beforehand.
“The rehearsals lasted a couple of hours and were enjoyable. Our first performance was on Friday 22 September and everyone was excited, as this was an incredible opportunity for all of us. Our initial nerves were settled as soon as the performance began, and we saw the audience enjoying the movie and the live music. Listening to the Philharmonic Orchestra and the choirs come together was a wonderful experience, it was truly a performance to remember.
“The Royal Albert Hall is a venue like no other, with incredible architecture and an illustrious history. As I have not sung at the Royal Albert Hall before, this was a privilege and I look forward to singing there with the choir again someday!”
