This week, students in Chinese Culture Club had fun celebrating and learning about the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The festival celebrates the autumn harvest, family reunions and the full moon, and has a variety of traditions and customs that surround it. As part of their learning, students in the club had the opportunity to take part in a mooncake-making workshop.
After learning about the history and tradition of the festival, students were treated to a live demonstration, showing them how to fill the cakes with red bean paste and use a traditional mooncake press to create the finished shape and intricate designs.
Commenting on the experience Junior Year student Joshua said, “My favourite part of the workshop was creating the mooncakes with many intricate patterns and fillings. I learnt a lot about mooncakes; what they are, traditional fillings and how they’re made!”
Second Year Student Skylar also enjoyed the workshop and said, “I had the pleasure and joy to make mooncakes with my friends and learn about Chinese Culture and why they celebrate this festival.”
Chinese teacher Ms Cao, who ran the workshop said, “Students celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival by taking part in a hands-on mooncake-making workshop. They learned about the festival’s traditions and symbolism before making their own traditional and snow-skin mooncakes. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience Chinese culture through food, creativity, and shared celebration.”
Students around the school have been encouraged to mark Mid-Autumn Festival, with Chinese songs shared by Mrs Wang, and a singing competition to win fortune cookies.
