Three student editors of the philosophy-themed magazine iThink have just launched the 2025 edition, exploring the theme of language and you can read it here

The theme was chosen by Caitlin, Dhyan and Mia, all Upper Sixth Religious Studies students, as it is a subject addressed at A Level and gave the team an opportunity to explore how it affects different areas within philosophy. In the magazine, Caitlin discusses cataphatic language, while Mia and Dhyan discuss the language of morality.

A special feature article was written by Mr Hutchings, Head of History and Politics, who links Wittgenstein’s teachings on language to his own experiences. Two Lower Sixth students Harry and Katy, also contribute brilliant articles that look at contemporary issues surrounding language.

The editorial team said, “iThink is also a platform for some of our younger philosophers, and this year, we are excited to include three articles involving Lower and Middle School students. The first is by Fourth Year Joshua, who asks important questions about inaccuracies in religious scripture. Meanwhile, Third Year Kieran presents an animated discussion of descriptions of God. Our Junior Philosophy Club also makes a welcome return to the magazine, asking some of the biggest questions about language and life. We hope you enjoy reading this edition.”

Mrs Beresford-Miller, Head of Religious Studies, said, “This year’s team have produced another excellent edition of iThink magazine. Drawing from a range of perspectives, they have considered the idea of language in a range of ways. As philosophers, language is at the heart of everything we consider; the meaning or use of words informs so much of the debate in and outside of our classrooms.

“Wittgenstein said, towards the end of his philosophical journey that, ‘all the most meaningful things lie beyond language’. He was trying to suggest that we cannot put into words that which means to the most to us: love, friendship, experience, and many other things that give us the most influential moments of our lives. This does not stop us from trying to verbalise our inner most ideas or ideals and the job of the philosopher is to try to get closer to the truth in the meaning of words.

“I am proud of this year’s editorial team in their rigorous pursuit of the meaning of language and hope you enjoy the magazine they have produced as part of this endeavour.”

iThink magazine is an annual student-led publication which has been produced by A Level Religious Studies students at Trinity School, Croydon, since 2016. Students can choose an area of interest or something topical and delve deeper into it beyond the confines of an A level syllabus. They can engage with primary texts, often at degree level and become an expert in a small area of study without worrying about hitting the targets of a mark scheme.

iThink is one of four student-led publications produced this year. To check out the latest issues, head to our School Publications page.
