Upper Sixth prefect Eloise is looking ahead to an exciting future after being awarded a prestigious British Army Scholarship, supporting her journey from Trinity to university and ultimately officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
The Army Scholarship is open to Sixth Form students who are planning to attend university before pursuing a career as an Army officer. Successful applicants receive financial support during Year 13 and university, as well as a guaranteed place at Sandhurst following their degree.
For Eloise, the scholarship is the culmination of an ambition inspired by several years in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
Before joining Trinity in the Lower Sixth, Eloise was a JAGS student and member of the Dulwich College CCF, where her experiences ranged from live firing and first aid competitions to “camping in torrential rain, and staying dry!”
Since joining Trinity CCF, she has particularly enjoyed taking on greater responsibility, including leading and teaching new recruits. There has been one rather memorable highlight too: “The overall highlight definitely has to be meeting the King!”
Eloise applied for the Army Scholarship while in the Lower Sixth. Following a medical and interview, she attended a three-day selection event in Westbury, where candidates faced a series of physical, intellectual and leadership challenges.
“The three-day camp was one of the most surreal experiences, a cross between Kingsman and Squid Game, without any death!” she says. “It was definitely stressful but exhilarating, and very beneficial for my personal development. It’s an experience I highly recommend.”
Next, Eloise plans to take a gap year before studying English Literature at university, followed by officer training at Sandhurst.
She credits CCF with helping to shape that ambition. “Trinity CCF supported me through the process, as did some of my friends from CCF who are previous applicants. Without CCF I would never have known about the process, let alone applied for and achieved it, something for which I am very thankful.”
Looking further ahead, Eloise is excited by what a career in the Army could offer. “Initially it appealed to me because of my enjoyment of CCF, and now because of the camaraderie, the opportunities it offers and its meritocratic structure.”
