Upper Sixth student Evan has rounded off a brilliant summer of athletics by winning three U18 national titles at the Youth Development League (YDL) Upper Age Group Final last weekend.
Representing Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC, Evan competed in the A string 100m and 200m, winning both races to become U18 YDL National Champion over both distances. He then anchored the U18 4x100m relay team to victory, securing his third national athletics title of the weekend.
It was also a hugely successful competition for Blackheath & Bromley, who finished first overall to be crowned national champions once again.
“The run-up to YDL has been quite long, as it was really the last major competition of the season and the big push to end it well,” says Evan. “I was quite nervous on the day, particularly for the 100m where room for error is minimal.
“The 100m was super windy, running into a major head wind, but I still ran a good race. The 200m again was very windy, I made sure to maintain my form and finish the race strong.
“I feel ecstatic after winning three YDL national titles. It’s a nice way to round off a good season.”
It follows a memorable summer of athletics for Evan. He also raced at the London Athletics Meet Diamond League at the London Stadium, anchoring his club’s winning U18 relay team in front of around 15,000 spectators.
“It was truly magical,” he says. “I got to warm up with all the pros, including Zharnel Hughes, Jeremiah Azu, Keely Hodgkinson and Dina Asher-Smith. I was put up on the big screen and didn’t know what to do!”
Evan has also competed for Blackheath & Bromley in the National Athletics League, making his A-string debut in both the 100m and 200m.
Now entering his final year at Trinity School, his ambitions extend well beyond school athletics. “I want to really cut down my times and earn a GB spot. I’m definitely going to continue track after Trinity, hopefully taking it to professional level in the next few years.”
Evan also paid tribute to the support he has received at school: “I could not do events like this without the support of the PE department at Trinity.”
