Earlier this summer, a group of Trinity students jetted off to Sweden to take part in the Gothia Cup. The Gothia Cup is the world’s largest and most international youth football tournament, hosting roughly 1,900 teams from 75 different nations. We entered a Boys’ 15 and Boys’ 16 team into the competition, taking the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best youth teams in the world.
The competition commenced with the group stages. While both teams played brilliantly, the depth of talent on the international stage was remarkably strong. Both teams progressed to Play-off B, where the Boys’ 15s unfortunately suffered a first-round exit. The Boys’ 16s, however, played well against some strong competition, advancing to the Round of 16, where they were unfortunately defeated by the Halliford Colts with a 2-5 loss.
Although the teams may not have progressed as far as they had hoped, they played well against tough international competition, allowing them to gain valuable experience and exposure to high-level matches.
Reflecting on the trip Dylan, who played for the Boys’ 16 side said, “It was an amazing tournament with many unforgettable memories and some outstanding performances throughout, and finishing with a winning record was great considering the strong competition.”
Fraser, who played for the Boys’ 15s, similarly explained: “Though the football wasn’t too successful for the U15s, we had a special penalty shootout win in the first knockout round, after frustrating narrow defeats previously. Everyone in that team fought hard for 50 minutes and we eventually secured the win after their player skied it over the middle. That win won’t leave our memories soon and as Mr Turner said, ‘those moments, you’ll never forget’. In almost every game, opponents were much bigger and stronger but nonetheless the boys were still ruthless and never gave up, so huge credit to them.”
