Shirley Park played host to two of the most prestigious fixtures in the cricket calendar this week, as both Trinity’s Boys’ 1st XI and Girls’ 1st XI took on representative sides from the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

With packed pavilions, glorious sunshine and cricket played in excellent spirit throughout, the matches provided a fitting celebration of the continued growth and success of the sport at Trinity.

The Boys’ 1st XI welcomed the MCC for one of the longest-standing traditions in the school’s sporting calendar. After winning the toss, Trinity invited the visitors to bat first and worked hard in challenging conditions on an excellent batting surface. Rounak and Raghav claimed two wickets apiece, while Kaylan added another as the MCC declared on 257-5.

In reply, Aarush looked set for a significant score before an unfortunate run out, while Tommy and Anish both produced impressive half-centuries to keep Trinity firmly in the contest. The school finished on 239-8, just 18 runs short of the visitors’ total, with the match ending in a draw after an absorbing day’s cricket.

It was also a pleasure to welcome back former Head of Cricket, Mr Richards, who joined players and spectators for the occasion.

The Girls’ 1st XI were meanwhile hosting the MCC Women’s team for only the second fixture between the sides, highlighting the remarkable progress of girls’ cricket at Trinity in recent years.

After electing to play a 30-over match, Trinity’s bowlers faced an experienced MCC batting line-up. Rosie, Anya and Chloe all impressed as the team maintained their discipline and stuck to their plans throughout the innings. The visitors eventually reached 272, with several batters retiring after passing 50.

At lunch, captain Rosie spoke confidently about cricket at Trinity and the opportunities available to girls within the programme, drawing warm applause from players and guests alike.

Trinity’s response with the bat was led by an excellent 60-run opening partnership between Eloise and Caitlin. Eloise made a fluent 32 before Caitlin anchored the innings superbly, carrying her bat through the full 30 overs to finish unbeaten on 42*. Trinity closed on 127, showing maturity, resilience and determination against strong opposition.

The spirit in which both matches were played reflected the values of the game and of the School. Caitlin was awarded the MCC Spirit of Cricket cap, although the MCC captain commented that any member of the Trinity side could have been a worthy recipient.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the week was the reminder of how far cricket at Trinity has come. While the boys continue to enjoy a long-established relationship with the MCC, the girls’ fixture demonstrated the rapid development of the programme. As recently as 2022, many of the students involved were playing ‘incrediball’ cricket. To now be competing against an MCC representative side is a remarkable achievement and an exciting sign of what lies ahead.

We are grateful to the MCC players and officials for two outstanding fixtures and to all the staff, grounds team and supporters who helped make the occasions so memorable.
