At the end of April, we were delighted to be invited to the prestigious Achilles Schools’ Relays. An annual event founded in 1963, it attracts some of the best school athletics teams from across the country, to compete in a range of different relay races.
We took a small group of Trinity students up to the Iffley Road Sports Centre in Oxford for the day, with all the teams running well and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship. All participants run on the famous Iffley Road track where Roger Bannister first broke the four-minute mile barrier. In addition, Trinity still holds the Guy Butler Trophy after our U15 boys team set the record of 8:52.9 in the 4x800m/3x800m race back in 2015. There was a lot at stake!
One of the highlights of the day was the open boys’ 4x100m relay, where Trinity’s team ran extremely well placing second in their heat just behind Brighton College. This meant they progressed to the final, which was very exciting for Trinity participants and spectators alike, and the team ultimately placed fifth overall. The girls’ team also had a good day out, despite limited experience in athletics, placing third in their 4×100 heat and just missing out on finals qualification.
Reflecting on the event Lower Sixth student Sophie explained, “It was a very fun day, although it did get quite competitive at times, with a lot of good schools represented. I think we still did well, especially with the boys making it to the finals in the 4x100m relays. The girls also did very well too, considering it was our first time racing together. Ultimately, it was great spending time with my friends and getting to know some of the younger Trinity students.”
Well done to all the students who competed.
