Well done and congratulations to Second Year student Joey who competed at the Italian Kickboxing World Cup last weekend, and is now ranked fourth in the world for his age and weight.
The event, held in Venice, saw the very best kickboxers from across the world come together to compete in all major kickboxing styles. Joey competed in four categories for his club Phoenix Martial Arts who were awarded a seventh overall position in the team competition.
The competition was tough, and with some of the most talented athletes competing, and with over 4,036 entries from 48 countries. Each of Joey’s categories had around twenty fighters in them and he did incredibly well, placing fifth in points fighting (-37kg category) and ninth in points fighting (-42kg category). It was in light contact and kick-light where Joey really shined, placing second and first respectively (-37kg).
What makes Joey’s achievements even more impressive is the fact that he pushed himself on to compete in a higher weighting category, where he tested himself against bigger athletes.
Commenting on his success Joey says, “I am now back in training getting ready for the GB Nationals in April where I am hoping to qualify to represent Team GB again in the Worlds next September.”
Well done Joey and good luck for Nationals!
