This week, as we step into the Year of the Horse, Trinity has been buzzing with colour, creativity and friendly competition organised by the Chinese Department.

All form groups have been taking part in a Lunar New Year quiz, testing their knowledge of traditions, zodiac animals and customs celebrated across the world.

On Thursday, Ms Cao hosted a Tai Chi Fan lesson in our new Studio, offering students the chance to experience something completely different. They had to channel their pre-lunch excitement into some flowing movements and try to master the art of opening the fans in a calm and graceful manner.

The celebrations continued during Friday lunchtime with a special Chinese art and calligraphy workshop, open to all. Over twenty students signed up to practise traditional techniques and learn more about the symbolism around Lunar New Year. They used bamboo brushes and ink, trying out different symbols before producing the Chinese character fu (福; fú), meaning ‘fortune’ or ‘good luck’ on red rice paper to hang on their doors at home. It was wonderful to see the students putting in great effort to their work.

After half term, the focus turns to our First Year students, who will take to the stage on Thursday 26 February for a Chinese Karaoke competition! We can’t wait to hear what they do.

Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world and studying it at Trinity offers students a fantastic opportunity to understand a unique and rich culture. Lessons are immersive and lively, helping students grow in confidence and fluency. With well loved trips to China and Taiwan, and strong exchange links, language learning here goes far beyond the classroom.
