For the last six and a half weeks, Trinity Boys Choir treble, Zandy, has been rehearsing at the Rome Opera House, for a run of performances of Benjamin Britten’s haunting masterpiece, The Turn of the Screw. Zandy is playing the role of Miles, sharing the stage with renowned international stars Ian Bostridge CBE and Christine Rice MBE, under the direction of Deborah Warner CBE. Watch the trailer here.
Mr Mulroy, Director of Trinity Boys Choir, says, “When the boys take on a principal operatic role, it’s both a wonderful opportunity, and a huge challenge: they work alongside world-class professionals, and are asked for the highest level of professionalism at every turn. This is Zandy’s first engagement of this kind, and he has worked hard, and come a long way (and eaten a lot of gelato!). It’s been a privilege to see the superb team here take him to their hearts, cherish him, and empower him to give the best of himself.”
Zandy says, “I have had such a great time here, it’s been an experience of a lifetime, and I still can barely believe that I’m doing it! I’ve been here for nearly two months now, and I want to go home and go back to school, but I also don’t want it to end! It’s been the best thing I could ever ask for.
“I have learned so many techniques being around such great singers, who are all super nice and incredibly good at what they do. It has been incredible meeting all the cast and getting to know each other while also working six hours a day. The amount of fun I have whilst doing the shows is great and the time just flies by! I am so thankful to Trinity for giving me so many musical opportunities!”
Mr Mulroy continues, “Throughout his time here, Zandy has acquitted himself brilliantly, and it’s easy to see how the experience he has had, of living and working to such a high level, and in such an extraordinary place, is something he can carry into his future life. He dreams of being an actor, and it’s hard to imagine a better way of paving that path.”

The opera runs from 19-28 September, and the dress rehearsal on 17 September (and ‘Teen Peek’) was attended by hundreds of schoolchildren and young people, with Zandy receiving a huge ovation. This doesn’t happen by accident, and a lot of invisible work goes into these projects: he is wonderfully supported by his proud parents, the Trinity Music Department, and the wider school community. We are all immensely proud of his achievements.

The world-renowned Trinity Boys Choir is based at Trinity School Croydon, with over 100 trebles coached every week. As well as Zandy’s professional commitments, another group of choir members are current performing as Fairies and Puck in A Midsummer’s Night Dream at Glyndebourne.
