Five enthusiastic First and Second Year students from Trinity School, Croydon – all members of the weekly History Detectives club – paid a special visit to Whitgift House Care Home this week.

The purpose of their visit was twofold: to capture residents’ personal memories – particularly their recollections of life in Croydon – and to gain insight into the history of the Whitgift House Chapel, which proudly celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Capturing Croydon’s living history

The Trinity School History Detectives Charlie, Joaquin, Max, Zachary, and William impressed everyone with their thoughtful and sensitive interview techniques. Their conversations with Whitgift House residents elicited a wide range of engaging, heartfelt stories.

One student commented on how some responses were completely unexpected, making the afternoon even more fascinating and meaningful.

The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by both residents and students alike, as they explored Croydon’s local history together and built a stronger intergenerational connection. The Trinity School History Detectives will now transform their research into a special presentation to commemorate the Chapel’s anniversary and honour the rich personal histories of the residents.

Whitgift House is part of the John Whitgift Foundation, and Trinity School students regularly visit the care home to take part in activity days, perform music recitals, or enjoy outdoor pastimes such as croquet and gardening. These visits are an important part of Trinity’s commitment to community engagement.

Celebrating 60 Years in Shirley Park

While the Chapel celebrates 40 years, Trinity School’s purpose-built site in Shirley Park also marks a milestone: 60 years since opening in 1965. The school’s move from central Croydon launched a new chapter of growth and innovation, enabling investment in outstanding co-curricular facilities for sport, music, drama, and the arts.

Looking ahead, Trinity continues to evolve. In September 2027, the school will welcome girls into Years 6 and 7, building on 14 successful years of a co-educational Sixth Form. More information about Trinity’s move to full co-education can be found here.
