This term has been a busy one for Trinity Boys Choir, with our young singers involved in five different opera productions in the UK and abroad.

Nine boys have just finished the first run of a new production of Georges Bizet’s much-loved opera, Carmen, for the Glyndebourne Festival 2024. The opera was directed by Tony-Award-winning Broadway director Diane Paulus, who was making her house debut, and the production was also part of Glyndebourne’s 90th anniversary celebrations.

Rehearsals at Glyndebourne started during the Easter holidays and the students have just finished the first run, after working hard and receiving great reviews. They will take a well-deserved break until a second group of ten shows begins at the start of August. The students’ final obligation will be to join the Glyndebourne company for a performance at the BBC Proms on Thursday 29 August.

The Trinity Boys Choir singers joined with children from Glyndebourne’s Youth Opera Company to produce a children’s chorus which has been universally acclaimed in reviews:

David Nice for theartsdesk.com, said, “Singing children (Glyndebourne Youth Opera, Trinity Boys Choir)…give their big roles full value.”

Benjamin Poore at Operawire says, “The combined forces of Glyndebourne Youth Opera and the Trinity Boys Choir (regular fixtures at the Festival) make a special impact of their own, clarion-voiced and remarkably versatile. Paulus’ demands on these young artists are considerable, as they dance and caper about, with complex blocking and a busy stage to negotiate, but they are vivacious and thrilling throughout.”

Adrian York, reviewing for London Unattached, said, “The cast of singing children, drawn from the Glyndebourne Youth Opera and Trinity Boys Choir were well-drilled and full of the kind of confidence and energy more often seen on a West End stage than in an opera house.”

Well done to all the students from Trinity School, Croydon, who were involved in this production.
