Trinity’s young musicians have been hard at work this month as the annual instrumental and singing section finals of the Trinity Musician of the Year competition reached their conclusion. Across strings, woodwind, brass, piano and singing, students performed for adjudicators and section heads, each receiving considered feedback and a valuable chance to hone their craft in a real performance setting.
The winners were:

Strings

Brass
Woodwind

Piano
Singing
Winners from every section now progress to the Recital Competition on 27 January, held in the TCH. They will be joined by three wildcard musicians who earned their places through a separate audition round: Upper Sixth Brayden D on saxophone, this year’s Steinway Scholar Isaac R on piano and First Year Elliot m on cello. With eight musicians in total, the Recital Competition promises to be one of the musical highlights of the year.
The structure of the competition gives students clear milestones across the year, with rehearsals building through the autumn and a renewed sense of purpose after the Christmas break.
Three musicians will be selected from the Recital Final to progress to the Concerto Final in early May. This flagship event is accompanied by an orchestra made up of both Trinity players and members of the London Mozart Players, giving students the rare and thrilling experience of performing solo repertoire with a professional ensemble.
Last year’s winner was cellist Tom S, and excitement is already building to see who will follow in his footsteps.
