Fourth Year student Andre had an unforgettable experience representing Ghana at the Africa Aquatics Zone II Championships in Accra earlier this month.

Andre was selected to join the Ghana National Swimming Team just a month before the competition, which brought together swimmers from 16 West and Central African countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Benin and Gabon. The three-day event took place at the impressive Borteyman Sports Complex, which has become a hub for international aquatics in the region.

“It was a proper rush to get my plane tickets and passport sorted,” said Andre. “I landed in Accra quite late but managed to meet a few swimmers, including Olympic athlete Abeiku Jackson. Before the competition, we had some training sessions at the beautiful pool and received our Ghana kit.”

Andre swam in multiple events across three days, earning medals in several categories.

  • Day one: Junior 100m Butterfly – 3rd place

  • Day two: Junior 200m Backstroke and 4x200m Freestyle Relay – 2nd place (relay); Junior 400m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle Relay – 2nd place (relay)

  • Day three: Junior 1500m Freestyle – 2nd place; Senior 4x100m Medley Relay – 2nd place

Andre’s performances helped Ghana secure third place overall in the Junior age group and first place in the Senior category. Andre swam alongside former Trinity student Kal-El, who won a silver medal in the 100m Butterfly and a bronze in the 200m Freestyle. The Ghana team also topped the overall medal table, collecting 69 medals in total.

“Overall, I really enjoyed this new experience of doing the sport I love in a completely different area and meeting new people,” said Andre. “It’s something I would love to do again.”

Congratulations, Andre, on representing your heritage with such pride and success.

Andre was recently voted Trinity Sportsman of the Month for September, for not only representing Ghana in swimming, but also his outstanding performances with the U15 rugby team. Andre also trains with the Senior Water Polo team.
