Students from the Middle School and Sixth Form recently attended an event in the Sandison Room which focused on the exciting prospect and realities of applying to overseas universities.

David Hawkins from The University Guys, specialists in international university applications, led the event and was accompanied by representatives from Savannah College of Art & Design – which has locations in the US and France – and TETR College of Business – which allows students to study across seven countries through one programme.

David spoke about the importance of fit – how students need to carefully consider and align with the ethos of their chosen overseas university for a successful application. He then went on to cover the financial implications of studying abroad in different countries and the value placed on study hours and broader education.

In a more interactive part of the workshop, students had to act as an admissions committee for a hypothetical student named Maya, deciding whether she should be accepted by either of the institutions present. The exercise highlighted the importance of extra-curricular activities for overseas applications and apprenticeships, in contrast to the super curriculars that are central to the UK process.

The need for students to develop a strong relationship with their teachers was also stressed, as they can provide vital letters of support for applications!

Lower Sixth student Thea said, “The session was especially helpful to gain an insight into what different universities around the world are looking for, and how the process can differ from country to country.”

Lower Sixth student Evan was able to quiz David during a one-on-one and said, “Our chat yielded interesting results such as providing valuable knowledge about Sport Scholarships.”

A handful of Trinity students go on to study at top-rated international universities each year with recent examples including Toulouse Business School, France, Brown University, Rhode Island, Ottowa University, Canada and Columbia University, New York. Studying abroad can offer enhanced employability, personal growth and cross-cultural competencies as students gain global perspectives, build international networks and develop independence.

The Futures team offer information and support to guide students in many different paths post-Trinity. If you are interested in overseas universities, please get in touch.
