Lower Sixth student Alex M has been selected to represent Team GB in the European Duathlon Championships in Spain next year, after an impressive performance at the English Championships.
Having placed 8th nationally, Alex has earned a coveted spot among the country’s top young athletes. What began as part of an injury recovery programme has turned into a real passion.
“I’d been a competitive runner for a few years, and during one of my recovery phases I spent a lot of time on the bike to maintain fitness,” he explains. “A little later down the line I decided to have a go at combining the two.”
Alex enjoys the variety and challenge of the duathlon, which combines running and cycling, and is particularly focused on refining his transitions between the two disciplines. “The most challenging aspect is trying to maintain focus in the second transition when you’re very fatigued, and avoiding cramps when changing shoes,” he says.
Between now and next summer, his training will include more ‘brick’ sessions – running straight after a bike ride – alongside key running events such as the National Cross Country Championships and the South of England Intercounties.
He also credits Trinity’s sports facilities and staff with supporting his development. “The facilities at Trinity have helped with my strength and conditioning training and also cross-training. The professional and supportive nature of the staff is much appreciated.”
Mr King, Director of Sport, said, “It’s fantastic news that Alex has been selected to compete for Great Britain in Spain next summer. This is a wonderful and well-deserved recognition of all his hard work and dedication – well done.”
Wishing you all the best with your training this year!
