Over October half term, Fourth and Fifth Year Spanish GCSE students set off for the ancient university city of Salamanca for a four-night immersion experience designed to build confidence, cultural understanding and, of course, a lot of conversational Spanish.

The group began their adventure by flying to Madrid before continuing by coach to Salamanca. On arrival, students were warmly welcomed by their host families, with two or more students staying together in each home. The homestay element was a standout highlight, offering students the chance to practise their Spanish in real-life settings and experience first-hand the warmth and generosity of local families.

Fifth Year Ollie L admitted he felt unsure at first. “I was quite sceptical about the trip at first as I didn’t know what to expect and what it would be like to stay with another family that only spoke Spanish. However, I was incredibly welcomed by them, and they were extremely nice.” He added that the trip “helped my Spanish through the language school and just communicating with the Spanish family. It grew my knowledge of Spanish culture… I would definitely recommend this trip to others.”

Students spent three mornings in lessons at LOLA Language School, working on speaking, listening and everyday communication skills, before heading out to explore the city in the afternoons. Visits included the Cathedral Towers, Plaza Mayor and a guided city tour, alongside fun team activities such as a photo rally and scavenger hunt. There was also time for chocolate con churros and a tapas evening, giving students the chance to enjoy some classic Spanish flavours.

A padel lesson brought plenty of laughter and competition, and before returning home the group visited Madrid’s famous Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, a definite highlight for many.

Fourth Year Julian C said, “The Salamanca trip was a great experience. I especially enjoyed exploring the city… The lessons at LOLA improved my confidence in Spanish too. Spending time with my classmates outside of school was one of the best parts.”

The trip offered a wonderful blend of cultural adventure, friendship, independence and language immersion, strengthening students’ GCSE Spanish preparation while giving them memories to last well beyond exam season.
