Trinity’s Sixth Form girls have achieved impressive results in two national competitions designed to inspire and challenge young female mathematicians.

In the Mathematical Competition for Girls (MCG), a brand new initiative from the UK Maths Trust, 40 of our Sixth Formers took part, including all 38 Lower Sixth girls and two Upper Sixth Further Mathematics students. The 90-minute challenge consisted of five demanding, answer-only questions that encouraged creative and rigorous thinking.

In total, five students achieved an outstanding Distinction award, placing them in the top 25% of the participants nationally. Corin BM, in the Upper Sixth, topped the school with her mark and Lower Sixth student Aarna M achieved Distinction and the highest score in her year. In addition, ten students received Merit awards – in total, a brilliant result for the first year of this challenge.

Alongside this, Upper Sixth students Ellie M and Ava S achieved Merit awards in the longer Mathematical Olympiad for Girls (MOG). This highly selective 2.5-hour paper consists of five challenging problems and is aimed at the most talented young mathematicians in the UK. Well done to them.

Teacher of Mathematics Mr Patel said: “We’re delighted with how our students approached both challenges with enthusiasm and resilience. The results reflect their curiosity and confidence in problem solving, and we’re proud to see so many of our girls embracing mathematics at this level.”

Both the MOG and MCG aim to encourage girls across the UK to engage in mathematical problem solving at a high level.
