This year, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Mitre Lectures, a dynamic series of talks featuring high-profile external speakers, designed to engage students with big ideas each half term.

These lectures offer students the rare opportunity to not only hear from but also interact with pioneering individuals who have redefined their fields. Covering topics across multiple subject areas, the series will expose students to ideas and perspectives beyond the typical secondary school curriculum, offering a glimpse into the intellectual excitement that awaits them at university.

The first two Mitre Lectures are:

  • On Tuesday 8 October (4.15-5.15pm) in the Mitre Theatre: Special guest Sultana Tafadar KC an award-winning King’s Counsel, will be discussing counter-terrorism law. Sultana’s expertise spans counter-terrorism and national security, criminal justice, human rights, public law, and public international law.
  • On Tuesday 26 November (4.15-5.15pm) in the Mitre Theatre: We welcome Sathnam Sanghera, British journalist (Financial Times, The Times) and Sunday Times bestselling author, who will be sharing insights from his book ‘Empireworld: How British imperialism has shaped the globe’.

The lectures will be hosted by our Sixth Form students, who will introduce each speaker and chair the Q&A session at the end.

While the Mitre Lectures are a core element of our Academic Scholars’ Programme, all students are invited to attend, with scholars especially encouraged to engage in this unique form of ‘intellectual risk-taking’.

Intellectual risk-taking is a key habit of scholarliness, which is explored in our Academic Scholars’ Breakfasts each half term, challenging students to confront difficult questions, engage with unconventional ideas, and explore complex or controversial topics.

We encourage all students to seize this incredible opportunity to be inspired by visionary thinkers, broaden their intellectual horizons, and fuel their academic curiosity.
