Lower Sixth students Elissa D and Amber S spent part of their half term representing England in an international korfball tournament, taking on some of the strongest teams in the world.
For those new to the sport, korfball is a fast-paced mixed team game, a little like netball and basketball, with boys and girls competing together in the same side.

Elissa first discovered korfball at primary school. “I like the fact that it’s a mixed sport and close to netball, so the skills can mix,” she explained. Those skills were put to excellent use when the England U17 squad faced Belgium and the Netherlands, who are currently ranked first and second globally.
Although England did not win, the team delivered a highly competitive performance and impressed with their resilience. “We had close scores and as a team scored many goals against their strong defence,” said Elissa. A particular highlight was holding Belgium to an 11–12 scoreline for much of the match, far closer than predicted.

Both students now have an exciting season ahead. Elissa has been selected to compete at Challenge, an U19 tournament in the Netherlands this December, before heading to the U19 European Championships at Easter.
Alongside their international commitments, both Elissa and Amber continue to contribute greatly to sport at Trinity. Elissa plays in the 1st Netball Team and finds that the crossover between the two sports strengthens her game. “Passing and defending transfer well, as accuracy and tracking the player are needed in both,” she said.
Congratulations to Elissa and Amber and we look forward to following their progress over the coming months!
