To break up the week of exams, the Trinity Geography Department took the Junior Year students out to Cuckmere Haven, Sussex for their Junior Grand Day Out. The trip was designed to introduce the boys to research in the field and have time to enjoy the beautiful local coastline.

The weather held firm for the day and the students went on to the beach under glorious sunshine and after a short walk, took part in an experiment on the effects of Longshore Drift on the coast. Using nothing more than a measuring tape, a timer and corks, the boys were able to see the process of sediment across coastlines taking place through ocean currents.

After this, our attention turned to making the most of the fantastic climate as the boys embarked on oceanside games of frisbee and cricket. Despite the lack of satisfaction in Mr Scarr Hall’s umpiring, spirits remained high, and the students continued to explore the beach.

Cuckmere Haven is situated on the far-Eastern end of the South Downs National Park and is a local conservation area, known for its endangered wading birds and stunning white cliffs. The students took great interest in these intriguing features, occasionally participating in some bird spotting and looking to get the best possible angle of the South Coast’s iconic limestone and chalk seafronts.

During a short walk to end the day, they excellently contributed to the nature reserve’s sustainability by participating in a beach clean, responding to their new understanding of the importance of not only the area itself to the species and communities that live on it, but also the necessity to conserve it for future generations. Overall, the trip was a great success, insightful and entertaining across all phases of the day, approached by the students with suitably high-octane intrigue and investigative enthusiasm. Well done all!

JBug Alex commented, “It was a great experience. We got to learn about how ocean currents work and how important it is for places like this.”
