Three Lower Sixth students have produced a brand-new student publication for the History Department, to share their passion for the subject with the rest of the school community. The inaugural issue of the Trinity History Journal was launched this month and the digital version is available to read here.
Josh, Alex and Jirka got together to produce articles covering topics as far-reaching and bizarre as a chicken on trial in Northern Switzerland in 1447, to the tragic Cambodian Genocide in the 1970s.
Josh says, “Alex and I initially had the idea of starting the Trinity History Journal one lunchtime when we realised that both the Economics and R.S. departments have publications. Given that both of us are very passionate about History, we decided that we should make a publication to encourage deeper interest in the subject across the school. We spoke to Mr Hutchings about our idea, and he was very supportive, as was the whole department.
“Alex and I began creating the magazine as co-founders and authors, which is when we decided that we needed another member of the team to help us fully realise what we wanted to achieve. This is where Jirka joined our team as lead editor and author.
“We make a great team due to our shared enjoyment in the subject and our range of interests allowing us to write a variety of articles on different topics within History. We chose the content of our magazine just based on historical events and stories that we found interesting or exciting and wanted to share with others through our magazine.
“In future editions, we will also be incorporating articles written by other students across the school, so please get in touch if you have anything you’d like to submit.
“We got a lot out of the experience of writing this magazine, both as a group and as individuals. As a group, we have developed our ability to work together effectively to meet a shared end goal and we have developed our writing skills in a way to more effectively communicate with the audience that will read the publication. As an individual, I have learnt a lot about how to use Canva and I have developed my ability to take on and give out feedback to the other members of the team in order to create a finished product that we are proud of.”
Mr Hutchings, Head of History and Politics, said, “This is a brilliant history publication and is a fantastic example of student independence and endeavour. The boys have done an excellent job pulling it all together and are keen to hear from other students who would like to contribute to any future issues. Well done to them.”
