In this week’s whole school assembly, Head of Academic Music Mr Holdsworth donned his Outdoor Activity Programme Co-ordinator hat to invite students to celebrate their ‘adventurous spirit’ ahead of World Adventure Day this Saturday 18 October.
Sharing stories from his own mountain expeditions and from colleagues across the school, Mr Holdsworth reminded everyone that adventure comes in many forms – from scaling peaks in the Himalayas to exploring the coastline closer to home. “Adventure offers the opportunity to interrogate our motivations; to challenge our expectations; to redefine our relationships – to know ourselves and others more deeply,” he said.
Staff stories ranged from ice climbing in the Cairngorms to volcano hunting in Ethiopia, all told with the joy and pride that come from shared experience. A key take out was the idea that ‘Good judgement comes from experience… and experience comes from surviving bad judgement’.
Mr Holdsworth encouraged students to see that adventure doesn’t always mean travelling far: “In a world of increasing awareness of the environmental impact of our travels, I think a celebration and exploration of everything the UK has to offer is justified.”
The assembly also introduced the Trinity Adventure Documenter Award, a new initiative inviting students to capture their adventures – whether through writing, photography or film – as part of the expanding Outdoor Activity Programme. More details on how to enter this will follow.
The growing outdoor activities on offer as part of our co-curricular programme aim to help students develop confidence, resilience and teamwork by offering opportunities for exploration and adventure outside the classroom.
As we approach half term, many students will be off on their own adventures, many through school trips to far flung place including Japan, China, Norway, France, Italy and Spain! We hope they all have a fantastic time.
