A group of 30 Lower and Upper Sixth A Level Business or Economics students enjoyed an enriching four-day visit to Sorrento and the Bay of Naples during half term, designed to deepen their understanding of business operations, sustainability and economic activity in Southern Italy.

The trip combined cultural exploration with hands-on learning, offering real-world insight into sustainable business practices, local entrepreneurship and the economic importance of the region’s thriving tourism and agricultural sectors.

Lower Sixth student Tomi W shared his day-by-day account of the experience:

Day 1:

After an early wake up, we got to Gatwick for 3am and made our way to Naples. From Naples to Sorrento, we stopped off at a pasta making factory, where we learned about the origins of the business and the pasta itself. We tucked into some of the homemade pasta, which was amazing, and most of us helped ourselves to seconds. When we got to the hotel, we relaxed for a little bit before wandering down to Sorrento town and enjoying a bit of free time to grab some food and explore.

Day 2:

We took an early coach ride to an olive oil factory, and visited a lemon farm and olive oil factory where we learned about the interesting ways they harvest the fruit. They use two different branches of an orange and lemon tree and merge it into one to make the yield of the tree increase, which was very interesting. After that, we learned how they make the olive oil, which was very efficient as they use all the resources from the seeds and leaves as animal food. We were then able to try the many different flavours of oil the company produced. From a spicy flavour to a vanilla flavour, the company had lots to offer.

From the olive oil factory, we went to a family run, pizza making business where we made our own pizza and learnt to make mozzarella. After that, we had free time to explore the town which was beautiful, with a stunning coast and a picturesque city that you would only dream of. We then headed back to the hotel for some much needed rest after a very long day of amazing activities.

Day 3:

Our final full day, we went to the beautiful and famous island of Capri. Firstly, we took a stunning boat trip around the island seeing some beautiful caves with extraordinary blue water. We then took the Capri funicular up to the main part of Capri, with an amazing view of the sea around us and some very expensive shops – which we avoided – but helped ourselves to a pizza! As the final part of our Capri tour, we walked around the island, learning some its history, and fully taking in the views that Capri had to offer. After departing the island, we had a little bit more time to explore the town before heading off to our final activity – gelato making! Thanks to a combined effort, we managed to make an amazing lemon gelato, which we all then enjoyed.

Day 4:

On the final day, after saying goodbye to our hotel, we spent time in the main town and then treated ourselves to an ice cream from the same place we had made our gelato the day before. After that, we departed Sorrento to Naples to catch our flight back to England, and were welcomed back with lots and lots of rain.

This memorable trip strengthened both subject knowledge and friendships, reinforcing Trinity’s commitment to curiosity, adventure and learning beyond the classroom.
