Well done and congratulations to First Year student Anton who has won the inaugural WhatsOnStage Award for Best Child Performance for his role as Young Thomas in the National Theatre’s production of Land of the Living.
Anton made his stage debut as Young Thomas last autumn, sharing the role with three young actors. The role required the young actors to speak in Bavarian and Polish and sing in German.
The four boys were presented with the award for Best Child Performance on Sunday. The new category, which aims to celebrate outstanding young talent on professional stages nationwide, featured a highly competitive field of young performers. Other nominees included young actors from Paddington the Bear (Savoy Theatre) and 13 going on 30 (Manchester Opera House).
Anton said, “I feel very honoured to win the award, there were amazing people nominated and I was shocked to win. The whole experience was brilliant, the cast felt like a family, and we all became great friends. Everyone treated me so kindly and I learned that the most important thing is to have fun.”
Anton is excited for the future, saying he just ‘loves drama’ and will ‘definitely’ be auditioning for the Lower School Drama production next term. Anton is also involved in many music groups and the Trinity Boys Choir, and will be performing at the Royal Albert Hall for the Lord of the Rings Films in Concert series in April and May.
Lucy Robinson, Director of Drama at Trinity, said:
“For Anton and the other young Land of the Living actors to be recognised in this inaugural children’s award is hugely exciting. It is a reflection of the efforts they all put into learning the languages and developing Thomas’ character to wow audiences at the National Theatre. I know Anton thoroughly enjoyed the rehearsal and performance experience, so for it to be recognised with an award is the cherry on top!”
