We were kindly sent this video from Miss Webber of Third Year Geography Society exploring earthquake-resistant structures, and putting them to the test.
The department’s ‘shake table’ stimulates and earthquake. The video can be viewed here.
There are several different experimental techniques that can be used to test the response of structures – and soil or rock slopes – to verify their seismic performance; one of which is the use of a table like this.
They can help students grasp complex concepts of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering: Engaging, hands-on experiments like this allow them to leap past dry theory and ‘experience’ the seismic response of building frames, making abstract concepts easier to understand.
