Congratulations to three Trinity students who have been named as Finalists in the BAFTA Young Game Designers 2024 competition.

The students entered the Game Making Award and had to submit an original game created as an individual or team of three. The entries were judged on gameplay design, creativity and suitability for their chosen games platform.

Lower Sixth student Caden has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the 15-18 year-old category, with his original hybrid skating and shooting game Trickshot. In the game, players take on the role of a cat skater accompanied by their drone mentor, navigating through a sprawling city to reach the train station swiftly. Combining unique skateboarding physics with gun recoil, players must execute tricks for both movement and combat.

Caden has entered the competition before, and was selected as a finalist when working as a team of three. Last year, he entered the competition with Trickshot, but it did not get shortlisted. Instead of abandoning the project, he sought feedback and implemented changes including rewarding tricks, adding tutorials and more, demonstrating great resilience, which has paid off!

Two Second Year students Sam and Sebastian have been named as one of 10 finalists in the 10-14 year-old category with their game RoboRogue. This rogue-like adventure, set in a post-apocalyptic world, sees players defeat enemies and upgrade weapons by obtaining random items from crates.

Sam and Sebastian have also been working on RoboRogue for a couple of years, working on the game during Coding Club. They have been taking on feedback to make the menu system more intuitive and adding ideas such as mini bosses while ensuring the core game is as enjoyable as always.

Mr Page, Head of Computing, says, “It has been great to see the students’ different versions of the games as they’ve progressed over the last couple of years. Great game development can take years of hard work, taking on feedback and making repeated refinements. That’s exactly what we find invested in by our BAFTA YGD finalists. Well done for being selected as finalists!”

BAFTA will announce the winners on its YouTube channel, on Thursday 27 June at 5.00pm. Winners will get industry supported workshops and their games will be playable at the Science Museum. In the meantime, you can play the games by downloading them from the BAFTA YGD website.
